Australian Council of Trade Unions

Australian Council of Trade Unions

a national body formed in 1927 which acts as the coordinator of the Australian trade union movement, oversees the management of each trade union and controls disputes within unions. Abbrev.: ACTU
In 2012, the ACTU consisted of 46 affiliated unions representing around 2 million workers. There is a branch of the ACTU in each state, usually called a Trades and Labor Council. During the presidency of Bob Hawke (1970–79) the ACTU played a prominent role in industrial disputes throughout Australia and in 1983 concluded the Prices and Income Accord with the then federal Labor opposition.
